They belong to the family Elapidae, which also includes well-known terrestrial snakes such as cobras and kraits. Unlike the majority of snakes that are terrestrial and live on land, sea snakes have undergone extraordinary evolutionary changes that allow them to live and flourish in the ocean. While some species are entirely aquatic and spend their full lives submerged in the ocean, others occasionally come ashore or reside in brackish waters where freshwater and seawater mix. The natural habitat of sea snakes is generally located in shallow coastal waters, encompassing a wide variety of environments such as vibrant coral reefs, dense mangrove forests, nutrient-rich estuaries, and extensive seagrass beds. These diverse and ecologically rich habitats provide an abundance of prey species, along with ample shelter and protection from numerous potential predators. These creatures possess a variety of highly specialized physical features and behavioral traits that enable them to survive, thrive, and hunt efficiently in diverse ocean environments. Their habitat preferences are generally focused on warm, shallow coastal waters that are abundant in marine biodiversity, providing both shelter and abundant food sources. Within these ecosystems, sea snakes play crucial and important roles as predators and integral members of the marine food chain, helping to maintain ecological balance. Gaining a deeper understanding of the biology and ecology of sea snakes not only broadens and enriches our overall knowledge of marine life but also highlights and emphasizes the urgent need to protect and conserve the fragile and delicate habitats upon which these unique animals depend for their survival. Understanding, the unique position of sea snakes in the natural environment will go along way to ensure that their natural habitat will remain untouched by human activities. Although, most sea snake reside in the salt water environments some venture onto land for recreation and to enjoy the warm sunshine. As a general rule sea snake are non aggressive and will not bite unless they are in direct danger. Their venom is highly toxic and can cause death if not treated with anti-venom soon after being bitten. The most important point to remember is that: sea snakes usually deliver a dry bite and their fangs are very small and are located in a dorsal position (back) in their heads, unlike land snakes.
